Alex Romero is a New York based artist who’s practice explores the documentation of life through painting. She received her BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. Each painting begins with a quick sketch using whatever is at hand- pencil or a wax pastel-directly on canvas. Once the sketch feels ready, acrylic paint is added, forming shapes that connect to one another. Everything is connected in every moment, even when there is a disconnect. It is all about the flow and the moment in each step of painting- taking in and taking out. It is a documentation of life and how we work through it. Themes for each painting come from conversations with others, exploring topics like how an individual overcomes uncertainty and continues to move forward. Acrylic paint is used to create a brighter more saturated look, reminding us how saturated our thoughts can play out inside us. Romero blends her academic background and design practice in window display knowledge to cultivate a strong sense of sight in space and movement in her work. Alex work reflects on identity as something continually shapes between being and becoming. Living through modern times, how do we navigate a fast- paced environment, capturing moments quickly, but also remembering the feelings and transforming them quickly onto surface.
